  • Hi, I'm Dave Kellett and this is the patreon page from my sci-fi comic Drive.
  • So you may know me from some of my other projects, the daily comics from Sheldon, which has been running online since 1998, or the comic strip documentary Stripped, or the book How to Make Web Comics, or web comics weekly or I also do some flamenco dancing on the side. Pretty good.
  • So, Drive is a totally free webcomic. Many of you probably already know it. It's about a second Spanish empire; it's a galactic empire. They've conquered not only Earth but a big chunk of the galaxy with tech stolen from a crash demolition.
  • And if you're not familiar with Patreon: Patreon's kind of like Kickstarter. But where Kickstarter says I... we need fifty dollars for a larger project, Patreon says, no, this is a longer series of art and I will be a patron of the arts in tiny little installments along the way.
  • So here is how it works:
  • [old-time radio announcer voice] I create the sci-fi comic strip Drive for you to read and enjoy - hmm, that's good reading. Then you, in turn, pledge a small amount on a continuing basis for the creation of new, better and wonderful strips. Yeees.
  • And you get to set how hig or low that amount is gonna be, so go low, I get it, you're not Bill Gates. No one's asking you to be Bill Gates. Why are we even talking about Bill Gates? Stop talking about Bill Gates.
  • Even the smallest amount makes a huge difference because the goal here is not to have you give a bajillion dollars. The goal is to have a bajillion people give tiny little amounts, because that all adds up.
  • I love Drive. I love telling this story. I love the characters. I love the ships. I love the planets. I love the fact that it's an epic tale, it's gonna take me, like, seven years or eight years to get it out into the world. But the strip only make up a tiny portion of my income, like a two to five percent.
  • [shows pie chart] So here's Drive and here's everything else. [writing says "I made this on Excel! ... Like a big boy!"]

But here's the game chager: With Patreon, people like you who love the strop can help make that strip a definite, a guaranteed update schedule.

  • By supporting Drive, you're getting more and better content. You're getting it on a more consistent basis. And when we reach certain goals you're getting a website that loads faster because we remove third-party ads and way down the line - oh, fingers crossed - we might even get to a two times a week schedule.
  • And if you wanna give a little bit more, you can get specia access to convention exclusives or artist edition books or even personalized frameable sketches that I can draw just for you. As a friend. We're gonna be besties. [nods] [heart transition]
  • So that's the basic idea. That's the idea of Drive on Patreon and Patreon on Drive. And I want to thank you guys for reading the strip and I want to thank you for supporting this strip. We're gonna do amazing things together.
  • And I... I noticed we had a little bit of extra time, so I want to tell you about a little stretch gload which might sound crazy, but just bear with me, I've been writing some "Murder, She Wrote" fanfiction where Jessica and I -
