The extent of Fillipod Knowledge

While I'm sure Makers understand how the Drive works, I do wonder whether the Fillipods' knowledge is as deep as you might assume from Cuddow's statement that they already know how it works. On Page 0005, Conrado explains that he does not know how the Drive works, despite being able to reverse-engineer it and such. He doesn't, however, actually understand what it does. I wonder whether the Fillipods' understanding of the Drive mirrors the humans': they got it from an alien race and can reverse-engineer and build it, but they don't really get its inner workings. Essentially, I'm wondering whether we should put Fillipods on the same level as Makers, as far as Ring Drive knowledge goes.
