Trivia

  • This page is called "Language Time"
  • Except for Russian (which has only been used in My Distant Homeland so far), the language of the Continuum and possibly Mandarin Chinese (for Du Fu), all known languages (and more) are displayed here:
    • Hybrid is the standard language in the Empire and in the comic and it's supposed to be a mix of English and Spanish.[1]
    • Fillipod was first used in this comic not many pages ago.[2]
    • Tesskan writing (see Dave Kellett's elaborations below for identification)
    • the "song" language of the Consortium of Duvell[3]
    • Grasskan[4]
    • Español antiguo (translated: archaic Spanish) seems to be Spanish as it is still spoken in the 21st century.
    • Pig latin (although readers noted that it should be "Ould-way ou-yay ike-lay another-yay ant-play?")
  • Dave Kellett had the following to say on two of the displayed fonts as a reply on a comment:

Tolkien is a huge influence on me, *broadly* speaking -- but in this case the look of those languages came down to the necessities of design.

Fillipods speak a florid, poetic, highly purple prose, and the style of writing most associated with that is 17th and 18th-C cursive handwriting. Design-wise, you can't communicate florid speaking without a florid script: A san-serifed font just won't cut it: You need something in the vein of John Hancock's signature.

Similarly, for Tesskans, they're a BARELY-literate species, so you need to harken back to barely-literate cultures: The crude, hacking lines of Viking runes or Mesopotamian cuneiform. And since Tesskans write with their actual claws, it has a similar look and feel to runes and cuneiform etc.

  • Translations:
    • ¿O posiblemente español antiguo? - Or possibly old Spanish?[5]
